Template:New World Trade Center Two World Trade Center (also known by its street address, 200 Greenwich Street) is an 88-story skyscraper under construction as part of the new World Trade Center complex in Lower Manhattan of New York City. The tower will be located in the northeast corner of the Template:Convert World Trade Center site, where the former 5 World Trade Center stood, with the original 2 WTC offset to the southwest. When completed, 2 WTC will be the second–tallest skyscraper on the World Trade Center site and the second–tallest in New York City, following One World Trade Center.

BackgroundEdit

Planned layoutEdit

2 WTC will have a height of 1,270 feet (387 m), with a tripod-shaped antenna that allows the building to reach a total height of 1,350 feet (411 m).[1] In comparison, the Empire State Building's roof at the 102nd floor is 1,250 feet (381 m) tall, and its antenna is 1,472 ft (448 m), and the original 2 World Trade Center (often referred to as the "South Tower") was 1,362 feet (415 m). The structural engineer for the building is WSP Cantor Seinuk, New York City.[2] The Curtain Wall/Cladding consultant for the building is Permasteelisa SPA.[3] The tower will consists of 60 office floors, 4 trading floors, 5 retail levels, and 11.5 mechanical floors.[4] The total floor space of 200 Greenwich Street is anticipated to include 2.4 million square feet (220,000 square meters) of office space and another 130,000 square feet (12,000 square meters) for retail shops and access areas to the underground PATH railway.

DesignEdit

Designed by Foster and Partners, London, Two World Trade Center wears a mostly glass facade. There is an indentation along the center of each side of the building, giving the impression of four distinct blocks. The top of the tower is sheared off at an angle, creating a sloping roof which consists of four diamonds inclined toward the memorial park. These will provide a visual marker on the skyline of just where the original twin towers stood.[5] In order to incorporate WTC master planner Daniel Libeskind's "wedge of light" concept, the shape of the tower was pulled back from the street so that every September 11th, it will cast no shadow on the memorial park.

200 Greenwich Street is designed to be both safe and environmentally friendly, as are all the other towers in the new WTC complex. Security features include extra-wide, pressurized, and filtered stairwells, reinforced steel and concrete throughout, a central concrete core protecting the stairwells, elevators, and plumbing systems, emergency lighting, and glow-in-the-dark paint.[6] The building is also expected to attain a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certification.

ConstructionEdit

2 WTC foundation work began on June 1, 2010 and should last until late 2011.[7] As of August 2011, the sub-grade structural steel erection has begun along with two cranes active on site. 2WTC is expected to be complete to street level by mid-2012.[8]

FutureEdit

Two World Trade Center was originally scheduled to be completed sometime between 2011 and 2014. According to the current schedule, the tower will be built to street level by mid-2012, with Silverstein Properties planning to continue with construction as the rest of the World Trade Center site develops and attracts more office tenants.[9] As of the beginning of 2011, the Port Authority's One World Trade Center has one major tenant expected to sign, Conde Nast, and more are expected to follow. Should more companies start to take an interest in the towers, work on 2 World Trade Center will likely be finished sooner rather than later. However, the current finish date for this building is 2015.[10]

On March 25, 2010, the Port Authority released plans to build Two and Three World Trade Center to street level. The transit and retail podium at the 175 Greenwich Street site would be constructed immediately, the construction of Tower 3 will start while Silverstein Properties obtains financing for the remaining cost of the tower.[7]
